Your voice is a special tool. You use it to talk, sing, or laugh.

Making sound happens in three steps. First, your lungs act like a pump. They push air up through your body. Second, the air hits your vocal folds. These are small parts in your voice box. They are pearly white in color. The air makes them vibrate. This vibration creates the sound. Third, your articulators help shape the sound. These are parts like your tongue, lips, and cheeks. They filter the sound to make words.

Everyone has a unique voice. This is due to your body shape. It also depends on the size of your vocal folds. In men, these folds are 17 mm to 25 mm long. In women, they are 12.5 mm to 17.5 mm long. Longer folds often make a lower pitch.

Your voice can also show feelings. You can sound happy or sad. Singers use their voices as instruments. They use vocal resonation to make the sound better. This is when sound travels through air spaces in your body. It makes the voice stronger and richer.
