When we speak, we use more than just words. We use sounds to show meaning. This is called prosody. Prosody is the study of speech sounds like pitch, rhythm, and loudness.

Pitch is how high or low your voice sounds. You can use pitch to ask a question. A rising pitch can make a sentence a question. A falling pitch can make it a statement. Pitch also helps show if you are excited.

Stress helps make certain parts of speech stand out. You can use stress by being louder or making a sound longer. This helps people focus on important words.

We also use pauses. A pause is a short break in speech. We might use sounds like "um" or "er" during a pause. These breaks help us group words into chunks. This makes it easier for others to understand us.

Prosody also shows our feelings. It can show if we are happy or sad. It can even show if we are being sarcastic. People use prosody in every language. It is a natural part of how we talk.
