Intonation (linguistics)

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Have you ever noticed how voices go up and down? This is called intonation. It is the way we use pitch to show feelings. It also helps us share meaning. For example, your pitch can show if you are surprised. It can show if you are excited. You can even use it to be sarcastic.

Intonation helps us ask questions. In English, a rising pitch can turn a statement into a yes-or-no question. If your voice falls at the end, you might be making a statement. Intonation also helps us pick between choices. If you ask, "Would you like juice or soda?" with a falling pitch, you want a choice. If you use a rising pitch, it sounds like a yes-or-no question.

People use intonation to highlight new facts. It can also help us organize our speech. This makes it easier for others to listen and remember. Some groups of people even have their own special patterns. These patterns can show who they are.

Different languages use pitch in different ways. Some languages use pitch to change the meaning of words. This is called tone. In English, intonation is mostly about our feelings and how we group ideas together.
