Register (sociolinguistics)

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

We use different ways to speak in different places. This is called a register. A register is a way of using language for a specific goal. It changes based on the situation.

Think about how you talk. You might use slang with friends. This is a casual way to speak. You might use formal words at school. This helps you be clear and polite. You might even use special words in a science lab.

Some experts use a scale to show these styles. One style is called frozen. These words never change. A pledge is an example. Another style is formal. This is for one-way talks like a speech.

There is also a style called consultative. This is for two-way talks. A doctor and a patient use this. They talk back and forth.

Other styles include casual and intimate. Casual talk is for friends. Intimate talk is for family. People use these different ways to fit in. It helps us match the moment. It is a way to show how we relate to others.
