Stylistics

language culture Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Have you ever noticed how people talk differently in different places? You might use casual words with your friends. You might use formal words during a job interview. This choice of language is called style. Stylistics is the study of these choices. It looks at how we use words and tone.

Experts study many kinds of writing. They look at famous books and news stories. They even study ads and religious talks. Some look at how people speak in certain areas. This is called a dialect.

One important part is called register. Register is the way we choose words for a situation. It depends on what we are doing. It also depends on who we are talking to. It even depends on if we are writing or speaking.

Stylistics also helps us understand poetry. Poetry often uses words in unusual ways. This can create a special feeling. For example, a poem might use a strange tense to create mystery. This helps readers feel the story more deeply.
