language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

People use words to solve real problems. This study is called applied linguistics. It is a practical way to use language. Experts look for ways to fix language issues in real life.

This work uses many different ideas. It joins studies like psychology and sociology. It also uses ideas from how we learn and how we live. This helps people solve many tasks. They might study how we learn a second language. They might look at how words are used in law. Some even study the language of food.

Applied linguistics is found all over the world. In the United States, it began with teaching English. In 1946, the University of Michigan made it a real field of study. Many groups help people share their work. The AILA group was started in France in 1964. In Canada, the group uses both English and French. In Ireland, the group uses the word Teanga. This is the Irish word for language. This field helps us understand how people use words every day.
