Anthropological linguistics

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

People use language to live together in groups. Some experts study how talk connects to culture. This field is called anthropological linguistics. It looks at how words help make social rules.

Experts study many parts of language. They look at phonology, which is the study of speech sounds. They also look at morphology. This is the study of how words are built. These tools help scholars understand how people think and act.

One way people use language is through code-switching. This is when a person switches between two languages in one talk. It shows how people move between different social groups. This can be a smart way to use the words they know.

Language also shows how people see the world. For example, the Penan people use six different words for "we." This shows how they view their own group. Some languages also have many words for colors. This can happen if those colors are very important to the people. By studying these patterns, we learn about the heart of a culture.
