Dell Hymes was a man who studied how people talk. He was a linguist and an anthropologist. These are people who study language and human cultures. Hymes wanted to know more than just grammar rules. He wanted to know how we use words in real life. He called this idea communicative competence. This means knowing how to speak in different social settings.

He spent much of his time studying the Pacific Northwest. He learned many Native American languages. He was likely the last person who could speak Clackamas Chinook. This language is now extinct, which means it is no longer spoken. Hymes also studied old stories and songs. He found that these stories have a poetic rhythm. He called this study ethnopoetics. This helps us see the art in the way people speak.

In his later years, Hymes faced serious claims of sexual harassment. Because of this, a portrait of him was removed from a school. Hymes taught at many famous places like Harvard and Berkeley. He also helped start a journal called Language in Society. He led many large groups for people who study culture. His work helps us see how talk brings people together.
