John Robert Ross was a famous American poet and linguist. A linguist is a person who studies language. He was known for finding new names for parts of speech. He used many clever terms to describe how sentences work. Some of these names include "gapping" and "sluicing." He also named a rule called the "penthouse principle." These names helped other experts talk about language more clearly.

John was a very busy teacher. He taught at MIT for many years. He also worked in Brazil and Singapore. Later, he taught at the University of North Texas. There, he led a program about poetics, which is the study of how poems work. He even used linguistics to study poetry.

John worked with many smart people. He helped develop a way of thinking called generative semantics. He also studied "syntactic islands." These are parts of a sentence that act like barriers. He discovered many rules about these islands in his 1967 work. John lived a long and full life. He died in May 2025 at the age of 87.
