He was born in Moscow in 1896. As a young student, he loved art and poetry. He even wrote poems using a secret name. These early years helped him love how words work.

Jakobson was a leader in a field called linguistics. This is the study of language. He helped start a new way to study sounds. This field is called phonology. He worked with a man named Nikolai Trubetzkoy to do this. They looked at how sounds form patterns. Jakobson also studied how language helps people share ideas.

He had many big ideas. One idea was about how we use language to talk. He said there are six main ways we use words. For example, poetry uses words in a special way.
