Nikolai Trubetzkoy was a famous thinker. He studied how people use language. He was born into a noble family in Russia. He went to school at Imperial Moscow University. Later, he studied in a place called Leipzig.

Nikolai was a great teacher. He taught in Russia and in Bulgaria. He also taught at the University of Vienna. He was a leader in a group called the Prague School. This group studied the rules of sounds.

He is known for a field called morphophonology. This is the study of how sounds change in words. He wrote a big book called Principles of Phonology. In it, he spoke about the phoneme. A phoneme is the smallest unit of sound in a language. This work helped make phonology its own field of study.
