Vladimir Propp was a scholar from Russia. He loved to study folk tales. He looked closely at 100 Russian fairy tales. He wanted to find how they were built.

Propp found that these stories follow a pattern. He found 31 basic steps. He called these steps "functions." These functions happen in a set order. One step is when a hero leaves home. Another step is when a hero meets a helper. This helper might give the hero a magic tool. The hero might also fight a villain.

Propp also found different kinds of people in tales. He said characters fit into seven roles. There is the hero who goes on a quest. There is the villain who causes trouble. There is a dispatcher who sends the hero off. There are also helpers and a princess or prize.

His work was a big breakthrough. Many people use his ideas today. Writers use them for books and plays. They also use them for films and games. Propp showed us how stories work. It is a way to see the bones of a tale.
