Vladimir Propp was a scholar who studied the magic of stories. He was a Russian and Soviet folklorist. He wanted to find the building blocks of folk tales. He looked at 100 Russian tales to find these pieces.

He called these pieces "functions." These are the simple units that make up a story. By studying them, he showed how stories are built. His work helped us understand how tales work. This makes the world of stories feel much more clear.

Propp found that these functions follow a specific order. A story often starts when a hero leaves home. This is called "absentation." Then, a hero might be given a rule to follow. If the hero breaks the rule, it is called a "violation." This often lets a villain enter the story.

The villain might use trickery to steal something. Later, the hero might meet a "donor." This is a helper who gives the hero a magic tool. These steps happen in a set sequence from 1 to 31.

Propp's ideas changed how we look at books and movies. He published his main book in 1928. It was called "Morphology of the Folktale." At first, people in the West did not notice it. That changed in 1958 when it was translated into English.

Since then, many people have studied his work. It has been translated into many languages like Italian, French, and Spanish. His ideas help us see the "bones" of a tale.

Propp also looked at the people in these stories. He found that characters usually fit into seven roles. One role is the villain who creates struggles. Another is the dispatcher who sends the hero on a quest. There is also the helper who aids the hero.

Other roles include the princess or prize. These characters help move the story forward. Propp showed that even different tales use similar types of people.

Today, we can see Propp's influence everywhere. His work is used in media education. Writers use his patterns for books and plays. Filmmakers use them for television series and movies.

Even people who make video games use his ideas. He showed that stories have a structure. This structure connects many different kinds of tales together. It helps us enjoy the stories we tell each other.
