August Schleicher was a famous German linguist. He spent his life studying how languages change over time. He believed that a language is like a living organism. This means he thought languages grow and age like plants or animals.

He believed languages start out very simple. Later, they grow more complex and detailed. Eventually, they might enter a period of decay. This idea helped people see languages as part of the natural world. He wanted to understand the deep history of how people speak.

To show these connections, Schleicher used a special model. He called it a Stammbaum, which means a family tree.

In this model, each language evolves from one parent language. Languages that share an ancestor belong to the same family. He first used these tree diagrams in an 1853 article. He also used them in his 1860 book about the German language. This was the first time a linguist used a tree to show how languages evolve. It helped people visualize how many different tongues are related.

Schleicher was a very hard worker in his field. He studied at the University of Tübingen and the University of Bonn.

Later, he taught at the Charles University in Prague and the University of Jena. He began by studying theology and languages like Arabic, Hebrew, Sanskrit, and Persian. In 1850, he wrote a book about the languages of Europe. He also wrote a scientific book about the Lithuanian language in 1856. He believed Lithuanian was a very perfect language. He thought it could compete with Greek and Old Latin.

One of his biggest goals was to find the Proto-Indo-European language. This was a very old language from long ago.

He used a technique called the comparative method to do this. This method involves comparing features of known languages. By looking at these patterns, he could guess what the ancestor language sounded like. In 1861, he published a big work called a Compendium. This book tried to reconstruct the original Indo-European language. He even wrote a short story to show his work. It is called Schleicher's fable, and it is about a sheep and some horses.

His ideas changed the way we look at words and history. Many people studied his work for a long time.

For example, a student named August Leskien studied with him in 1866. His ideas even influenced a famous scientist named Ernst Haeckel. While some people later suggested a "Wave Theory" instead of a tree, the tree model is still very common. It helps us see the links between the languages we speak today. Schleicher's work helps us understand our shared human past through the words we use.
