He was born in Mainz in 1791. His family moved to Aschaffenburg because of political trouble. There, a teacher named Karl Joseph Hieronymus Windischmann showed him the languages of the East. Bopp became very interested in Sanskrit. This is a sacred language used by people in India. A book by Karl Wilhelm Friedrich von Schlegel also helped spark his interest. Bopp wanted to understand the deep wisdom found in these ancient words.

In 1812, Bopp moved to Paris to study Sanskrit. The Bavarian government helped pay for his trip.

He spent five years working hard in big libraries. He studied many Sanskrit manuscripts. Some of these were brought from India by Jean François Pons. He worked through many wars and big changes in Europe. He met many smart people like Alexander Hamilton. Bopp focused on how words change their shape in a sentence. This is known as the conjugation system. He wanted to find the common origin of these grammar rules.

Bopp's work was a brand new way of thinking. Before him, people knew languages were similar. But Bopp wanted to prove why they were related.

In 1816, he published his first big paper in Frankfurt am Main. He compared Sanskrit to Greek, Latin, Persian, and German. He focused on how verbs work. Later, in 1820, he wrote about many other parts of grammar. He also edited beautiful stories from the Mahabharata. These books helped students learn to read Sanskrit texts easily. He was a pioneer in the field of philology.

Bopp lived a very busy life of discovery. He moved to London to meet other great scholars.

This was published in six parts between 1833 and 1852. It looked at Sanskrit, Zend, Greek, Latin, Lithuanian, Old Slavonic, Gothic, and German. He even studied the Albanian language. His work was so important that people started a fund for his studies in Berlin.

We can see Bopp's influence in how we study language today. He showed that language follows rules and patterns.

He did not just look at a list of words. He looked at how words fit together in a sentence. This helped people understand the history of ancient nations. He was a very kind and modest man. Even though he died in poverty in 1867, people loved him. His students called him a great teacher. He helped make the study of language a real science.
