August Schleicher was a German linguist. He studied how languages change over time. He believed that a language is like a living thing. He thought languages grow and age just like plants or animals.

To show this, he used a tree model. This is called a Stammbaum, or family tree. He drew trees to show how one parent language can lead to many new ones. This helped people see how languages are related.

Schleicher also worked hard to find the Proto-Indo-European language. This was a very old language from long ago. He used a method called the comparative method to study it. He compared different languages to guess what the old one sounded like.

He even wrote a short story to show his work. It is called Schleicher's fable. The story is about a sheep and some horses. He used words from the old language to write it. This was the first time anyone had done this. He also wrote a big book about the Lithuanian language. He believed it was a very perfect language.
