He loved to study the past. He is known as the founder of philology. Philology is the study of how people lived in ancient times. It looks at old writing and art. It also looks at how people used language. Wolf believed history and language fit together like one whole thing.

As a young man, Wolf studied many things. He learned Latin, Greek, and music. He went to a school called the University of Göttingen. One teacher there did not like his ideas. But Wolf did not let this stop him. He used the school library to keep learning. Later, he taught at the University of Halle. There, he set the rules for his new field. He even had a special group for his students to study together.

Wolf wrote many books about old stories and history. He moved to Berlin later in his life. He died while traveling to a place called Marseille.
