He was a German scholar. He spent his life studying how people used to write and speak. This study is called philology.

Karl was very good at a task called textual criticism. This means he looked at old books to find the best way to read them. He wanted to fix errors made by people copying books long ago. He made new rules to help do this work. He studied many famous poems and stories. He looked at works by writers like Walther von der Vogelweide. He also worked on the story of the Nibelungen.

One of his biggest jobs was with a poet named Lucretius. Karl showed how different old books came from one single source. This was a huge discovery for scholars. He also made a new version of the New Testament. He did not just use his own ideas. He looked at how the most ancient churches used the text. Karl was a great teacher at many universities. He helped us understand the history of language.
