He was born in a small village. Today, that place is in Slovenia. Later, he moved to the big city of Vienna. He worked as a librarian and a teacher. He also worked as a censor. A censor is a person who checks books.

Kopitar loved the Slavic languages. He wrote a book about Slovene grammar. This was the first scientific book for that language. He also studied very old writings. One was a set of papers called the Freising Manuscripts. These are the oldest known works in Slovene.

He was part of a big debate. People argued about how to write the alphabet. This was called the Slovene Alphabet War. Kopitar had many rivals during this time. One was a man named Matija Čop. They had different ideas about culture.

Kopitar helped many people. He helped a man named Vuk Karadžić. Karadžić wanted to change the Serbian language. Kopitar used his fame to help this goal. People still honor him today. A part of Belgrade is even named after him.
