He was a linguist and a philologist, which means he studied the history of words. He spent his life looking at Slavic languages to understand how they work. Kopitar was a very important thinker in Europe during his time. He worked in the big city of Vienna for many years. People respected him because he was a valued scientist in his field. He also served as a censor for books written in Slavic languages. This job meant he checked books before they were shared with others.

Kopitar did many important tasks to help preserve languages. In 1808, he published the first scientific book on Slovene grammar. This book was titled Grammatik der Slavischen Sprache in Krain, Kärnten und Steyermark. He also worked on very old writings called the Freising Manuscripts.

He was the first to translate and study them in a special way. These manuscripts are the oldest known works in the Slovene language. Kopitar used his skills to help create new textbooks for students. He even helped support a new chair for Slovene studies in Ljubljana in 1817.

His life began in a small village called Repnje. This village is in what is now Slovenia.

As a young man, he worked for a man named Baron Sigmund Zois. Zois was a scientist and a patron of the arts. Kopitar became his personal secretary and his librarian. This job let him meet many smart people. He met poets, historians, and other language experts. These meetings helped him grow as a thinker and a scholar.

Kopitar was involved in a big debate called the Slovene Alphabet War. This happened in the early 1830s. It was a fight over how to change the alphabet.

His main opponent was a man named Matija Čop. They also disagreed on how to build a national culture. Kopitar wanted a slow change for all South Slavic peoples. He believed peasants should keep using their local dialects. The debate eventually ended with a compromise using Gaj's Latin alphabet. This was a very important moment for the people of that region.

Even after his influence in Slovenia grew smaller, he helped others. He became a great help to the Serbian language reform. He supported a man named Vuk Stefanović Karadžić.
