He was a pioneer in a field called structural linguistics. This means he looked at language as a system of parts. He was one of the most important linguists of the twentieth century. Jakobson wanted to see how language works to share information. His ideas helped people study many things like music and art. He believed that language has a special structure that we can map out.

Jakobson developed many new ways to look at how we speak. He worked with Nikolai Trubetzkoy to study sound systems. This work helped start the modern study of sounds called phonology. He also looked at how words are built and how they fit together. One of his big ideas was about the six functions of communication. These functions explain why we use words in different ways. For example, the poetic function focuses on the beauty of the message itself. He also studied how sounds and signs work in movies and paintings.

His journey began in Moscow, where he was born in 1896. He grew up in a family that valued learning and science. As a young student, he loved the world of art and poetry. He even wrote poems under the secret name "Aliagrov." This interest in creative writing helped him become a great linguist. In 1920, he moved to Prague to continue his studies. There, he became a founding member of the Prague school of linguistics. He earned his Ph.D. from Charles University in 1930.

Life was not always easy for Jakobson during the wars. He had to move through several countries to stay safe. He lived in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden before reaching New York in 1941. In the United States, he taught at many famous places. He taught at The New School and later at Harvard University. He also worked as an honorary professor at MIT. In 1951, he co-authored a very important book about speech analysis. This book included his ideas on "distinctive features," which are the small differences between sounds.

Jakobson's work connects many different subjects together. His ideas about structure helped people study philosophy and anthropology. He showed that the rules of language can apply to many parts of life. His theories even influenced the famous linguist Noam Chomsky. Chomsky used Jakobson's ideas to help build his own theories of language. Today, people still study Jakobson's work in many different classrooms. He passed away in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on 18 July 1982. His legacy lives on through the way we study how humans communicate.
