John Robert "Haj" Ross was a famous American poet and linguist. A linguist is a person who studies how people use language. He spent his life exploring the rules of words and sentences. Ross was very good at naming new ideas in his field. He created many special terms to help other experts describe language. These names included "gapping," "sluicing," and "siamese sentences." He even used the word "squib" to mean a short scholarly article.

Ross was an expert at finding patterns in how we speak. He was famous for discovering "syntactic islands." These are parts of a sentence that act like barriers. He found that certain words cannot move past these barriers. In his 1967 MIT dissertation, he wrote about these rules in great detail. He also named several specific rules for these islands. These names were the "left-branch condition" and the "coordinate structure constraint." He also identified the "complex-np constraint" and the "sentential subject constraint."

His journey in learning began at several great schools. He studied at Yale University under teachers like Bernard Bloch and Rulon Wells. He also went to the University of Pennsylvania. There, he learned from experts like Zellig Harris and Henry Hoenigswald. Later, he went to MIT to study with famous thinkers. He worked with Noam Chomsky, Roman Jakobson, and Morris Halle. These teachers helped him become a leader in his field.

Ross spent many years sharing his knowledge as a professor. He taught at MIT from 1966 until 1985. During this time, he also worked in Brazil, Singapore, and British Columbia. After his time at MIT, he moved to the University of North Texas. He taught there until the spring of 2021. He taught many subjects like Syntax and the History of English. He also led a program called the Doctorate in Poetics.

He was also a great collaborator who worked with many people. He worked with George Lakoff to develop generative semantics. They also worked with James D. McCawley and Paul Postal. Ross used his skills to study poetry through the lens of linguistics. This helped people understand the science behind beautiful writing. He lived a long and productive life. Ross passed away on May 13, 2025, at the age of 87.
