There are different ways to speak the language, called dialects. The three main ones are Chakavian, Kajkavian, and Shtokavian. Standard Croatian is built mostly on the Shtokavian dialect. It uses Gaj's Latin alphabet to write words on a page. One special way it sounds is called ijekavian pronunciation. This makes the language sound unique compared to standard Serbian.

Writing in Croatian has a very long history. In 1501, Marko Marulić wrote a famous poem called "The History of the Holy Widow Judith." Long ago, noble families like the Zrinski and Frankopan tried to unite the language. They wrote in a mix of different dialects. In the 1800s, a group called the Illyrian movement worked to make writing more consistent. A leader named Ljudevit Gaj helped create the alphabet used today.
