This language is also the oldest written Slavic language we have today. It belongs to the South Slavic group of the Indo-European family. Many Christian Orthodox churches still use it for their services. People find it important because it connects many different cultures. It acts as a bridge to the past for many people.

Creating this language was a big job. Two brothers named Cyril and Methodius were the missionaries who did it.

They wanted to help people learn about their faith. To do this, they made a new alphabet called Glagolitic. They also translated important books like the Gospels and the Psalter.

They based the language on how people spoke near Thessaloniki. This area is in modern-day Greece. This work helped make the language a standard for others to follow.

History shows how the language moved across many lands. In the year 862 or 863, the brothers began their mission. They went to Great Moravia to help Duke Rastislav.

This area is now parts of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Later, the language moved to the Bulgarian Empire. King Boris I of Bulgaria welcomed the missionaries there. He set up schools to help people learn. One school was the Preslav Literary School.

There are many facts about how this language changed. In the year 893, a new script called Cyrillic became official in Bulgaria.

This script replaced the older Glagolitic alphabet. Old Church Slavonic spread to many places like Croatia and Serbia. It even reached the Kievan Rus'. By the middle of the 11th century, the language began to change. It split into different regional versions called recensions. These are also known as the Church Slavonic language.

Today, we can see how this language links to the modern world. It helps experts understand Proto-Slavic. Proto-Slavic is the common ancestor of all Slavic languages. Even though the language is very old, its influence is still here. Many modern Slavic names come from these early roots. For example, the names for Slovak and Slovene languages come from the word for Slavs.
