The Slavs are many different groups of people who share a common bond. This bond comes from speaking Slavic languages, which belong to a large family called Indo-European.

Today, these people live across huge areas of Eurasia. You can find them in Central Europe, Eastern Europe, and Southeastern Europe. Many also live in Northern Asia. There are even large groups living far away in the Americas and Western Europe.

Because they are spread out, Slavic cultures are very diverse. Some groups are mostly Christian, while others, like the Bosniaks, are mostly Muslim.

To understand the name "Slav," we can look at how the language works. The name likely comes from an old word for "word."

This suggests the name means "people who understand one another." It is a beautiful way to describe a group linked by speech. In the past, some people used different names for them. A writer named Procopius used names like Sclaveni in the 6th century. Other ancient records even called them the Veneti. These names all point back to a shared way of speaking.

History shows that the Slavs moved across many lands a long time ago. Between the 5th and 10th centuries, they began to settle new areas.

This happened as other groups, like the Germanic tribes, moved westward. The Slavs moved into lands near the Oder and Elbe rivers. They also traveled south into the Balkans and north along the Dnieper river. Some even may have traveled as far as North Africa. Some old records say they lived in thick forests and near marshes. They were described as tall, strong people who lived a hard life.

As these people settled, they began to build their own states. In the 7th century, a leader named Samo helped form a state in Central Europe.

Later, many famous kingdoms and empires appeared. The Kievan Rus' was a major state for the East Slavs. The Bulgarian Empire was a powerful home for the South Slavs. In the West, groups formed the Duchy of Bohemia and the Kingdom of Poland. By the 12th century, these organized states were the core of Slavic life. These groups helped spread literacy and new beliefs across the region.

Today, we can group Slavic people into three main branches. The West Slavs include the Czechs, Poles, Slovaks, and others. The East Slavs include Russians, Ukrainians, and Belarusians.

In the 19th century, a movement called Pan-Slavism started. This movement helped people focus on their shared heritage and unity. Even though these groups are very different today, they still share a deep history. They remain a large and important part of our world.
