The West Slavs are groups of people living in Central Europe. They share a common history and speak West Slavic languages.

These people split from a larger Slavic group around the 7th century. By the 8th and 9th centuries, they lived in their own independent lands.

Their languages changed and grew into different forms between the 10th and 14th centuries. Today, we recognize many groups like the Poles, Czechs, and Slovaks. Understanding them helps us see how Europe became what it is today.

Language and faith helped shape how these people lived. Most West Slavs became Roman Catholic starting in the ninth century. This choice brought them under the influence of the Latin Church. Because of this, they began using the Latin alphabet.

This made it easier for them to connect with western Europe. This was different from the East Slavs. The East Slavs used the Cyrillic alphabet and followed Eastern Orthodox Christianity. These different paths helped create the distinct cultures we see now.

History shows that many different tribes lived in these lands. Some people used the name "Wends" to describe them long ago.

Scholars still debate if that name meant a specific group or a place. In the 11th century, many tribes lived near the coast and the hills. These included the Wagrians, Obodrites, and the Polabians. Other groups were the Liutizians, the Rugians, and the Sorbs. They also included the Poles and the Pomeranians. Each tribe had its own way of life and its own home.

Many different states and leaders rose and fell over time. One important area was Great Moravia. It lasted from about 833 until around 907. This state covered much of Central Europe. It sat between what is now Eastern Germany and Western Romania. Before this, there were smaller places like the Principality of Moravia. There was also the Principality of Nitra. Some even talk about Samo's Empire as a very early state. These places show how the West Slavs organized themselves.

We can group these people by the languages they speak. One group is called Lechitic. This includes Polish, Silesian, and Kashubian. It also includes the Polabian and Pomeranian languages, which are now extinct.

Another group is the Czecho–Slovak group. This includes the Czechs and the Slovaks. There is also the Sorbian group in the Lusatia region. These groups show how one large family of people can branch out. Even though they are different, they are all part of the West Slavic story.
