Long ago, they split from other Slavic groups. This happened around the 7th century. By the 8th and 9th centuries, they lived in their own lands.

These people had many different tribes. Some tribes lived near the sea. Others lived in the hills. In the 9th century, many West Slavs became Roman Catholic. This was a branch of the Christian faith. Because of this, they used the Latin alphabet. This helped them connect with western Europe.

Their languages are also split into groups. One group is called Lechitic. This includes Polish and Kashubian. Another group is Czecho–Slovak. This includes Czechs and Slovaks. There is also a Sorbian group.
