A long time ago, one big church split into two.

This event is called the East-West Schism. It happened in 1054. But some scholars think it started earlier. Others think it happened much later.

The split divided the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church. Many things caused this break. They had different ideas about God. They also had different ways of doing things. For example, they used different types of bread in church. They also disagreed on how to lead.

One big argument was about the Pope. The Catholic Church believes the Pope is the leader for everyone. The Orthodox Church has a different view. They see leaders as a group of equals. They do not want one person to have all the power.

Leaders from each side got very angry. In 1054, they kicked each other out of the church. This was a very serious step. Later, wars made the two sides dislike each other even more. In 1965, leaders met to show goodwill. They tried to fix the old anger. They are still two separate churches today, but they still talk to each other.
