He lived a long time ago. He led the church from 1043 to 1059. Michael had many big fights with the Pope. These fights were about how to do things in church. One argument was about the kind of bread used in a special service.

Michael and Pope Leo IX also disagreed about power. The Pope sent a group of men to talk to Michael. These men were called legates. They were sent to represent the Pope. Soon after they arrived, Pope Leo IX died. This made things very hard for the messengers. They still tried to talk with Michael, but they did not get along.

In 1054, the messengers wrote a paper to kick Michael out of the church. This is called excommunication. Michael then did the same to them. This big split is called the Great Schism. It divided the church into two parts. This split lasted for hundreds of years. In 1965, leaders from both sides met to fix the bond. This was a big step toward making peace.
