Michael I Cerularius was a very powerful religious leader. He served as the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople from 1043 to 1059.

A patriarch is a high-ranking leader in the Eastern Church. Michael lived during a time of great change for many people. His life was filled with big disagreements and important decisions. These events helped change how the Christian world looked forever. He was born around the year 1000 in the city of Constantinople.

Many arguments broke out between Michael and Pope Leo IX. They disagreed about how to perform special church services. One big fight was about the type of bread used in the Eucharist. The Roman Church used unleavened bread, but the Greek Church did not. They also argued about who should have the most power in the Church. The Pope believed he had supreme authority over all other leaders. Michael did not agree with this view of power. They even disagreed about certain religious words and cultural customs.

In 1054, a group of messengers arrived to meet with Michael. These men were called legates and they represented Pope Leo IX.

While they were in the city, news arrived that the Pope had died. This made the messengers' job very difficult and awkward. They continued to talk about religion, but Michael found their actions inappropriate. On July 16, 1054, the messengers placed a paper on an altar. This paper was a charter of excommunication against Michael and his followers.

Michael reacted quickly to this move by his opponents. He held a meeting with 21 bishops and metropolitans in Constantinople.

This group decided to excommunicate the messengers in return. This event is known as the Great Schism. It caused a massive split between the Eastern and Western churches. This split meant that the two sides were no longer united. This division lasted for hundreds of years after the year 1054.

Michael also had many conflicts with the leaders of the empire. He sometimes argued with Empress Theodora about how she ruled. He even helped a general named Isaac I Komnenos take the throne.

However, Michael and Isaac soon had a very large fight too. Michael was eventually sent away to a place called Proconnesus. He died in 1059 before he could face a trial. In 1965, leaders from both sides met to fix their bond. This was a major step toward making peace between them.
