A schism is a big split. It happens when a group breaks apart. This can happen in a church or a movement. It can even happen between friends or family members.

In Buddhism, splits have happened for a long time. A man named Devadatta started the first split. Later, many different schools of Buddhism grew. Some groups grew in a natural way. Others started because of a split. In Thailand, two groups called Mahanikaya and Dhammayut exist. In Tibet, some schools have stayed split since 1616.

In religion, a schism is different from heresy. Heresy is when people reject a core belief. A schism is when people reject the leaders. It is about who has authority.

In Christianity, these splits can be very big. Some groups claim to be the one true church. They may even call each other schismatic. In Islam, many groups follow different paths. Sunni Muslims are the largest group. They follow the Sunnah. This means they follow the teachings of Muhammad. They believe his friends led the community after he died.
