A schism is a major division between people. It usually happens within an organization or a religious group. The word comes from the Greek word "schisma," which means a cleft or a division.

While we often talk about religious splits, a schism can also happen in non-religious movements. It can even describe a separation between friends, lovers, or brothers. A person who starts or encourages such a split is called a schismatic. This term can also describe ideas that lead toward a division.

In religious studies, it is important to distinguish schism from heresy. Heresy is when someone rejects a core belief or doctrine. A schism is different because it focuses on authority and leadership. It happens when people reject the communion or the leaders of a group.

Sometimes, these two things happen at the same time. One group might accuse another of having the wrong beliefs. However, a schism can occur even if everyone agrees on the basic ideas. It is mostly about who has the right to lead the community.

Buddhism has seen many divisions throughout its long history. The very first schism was started by a man named Devadatta during the life of the Buddha. Later, many different Buddhist schools emerged to study the same teachings. Some of these groups, like the Mahayana and Vajrayana movements, began as schisms. In Thailand, the Mahanikaya and Dhammayut groups are two examples of different lineages. Some Tibetan schools have even remained in a state of schism since the year 1616.

Christianity has many famous historical splits that changed the world. The First Council of Nicaea in A.D. 325 helped define the difference between heresy and schism. Some groups, like the Roman Catholic Church, claim to be the one true church. They may view the Eastern Orthodox Church as being in schism. At the same time, the Eastern Orthodox Church holds a similar view of the Catholic Church. In 2018, the Eastern Orthodox Church experienced a split between the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and the Russian Orthodox Church.

Other major faiths also have histories shaped by these divisions. In Islam, many different sects and schools of thought have developed over time. Sunni Muslims are the largest group and follow the Sunnah, which are the teachings of Muhammad. In Hinduism, the Sringeri Matha experienced a schism in the 16th century. This led to the rise of the Tunga Sringeri Math. The Kanchi Math also became a separate institution due to conflicts between different rulers. These examples show how divisions can shape the way people practice their faith.
