People around the world have many different ideas about sin. The word itself has a very old history. It comes from Old English roots that meant being "truly guilty." This suggests that sin is a judgment of wrongdoing. Today, many cultures use the term to describe various things. A sin might be a harmful act or a selfish thought. It can even be a word that causes pain to others.

Different religions have their own ways of explaining how sin works. In Christianity, sin is often seen as an offense against God. Some thinkers, like St. Augustine, described it as a desire that goes against God's eternal law. Many Christians also learn about the seven deadly sins. These are pride, greed, wrath, envy, lust, gluttony, and sloth. These are called "deadly" because they can lead to other bad behaviors.

Christianity also has a major idea called original sin. This idea suggests that humans are born with a sinful nature. A person named Irenaeus mentioned this idea in the 2nd century. Later, Augustine developed the idea further after the year 412 CE. Some groups, like the followers of John Calvin, believed this nature makes it hard to do good. Other groups, like the Catholic Church, teach that Baptism can erase original sin.

Other major faiths have very different views on the subject. In Islam, sin means breaking the commands of Allah. Judaism describes sin as "missing the mark" of God's law. In Judaism, hurting another person is often seen as more serious than a sin against God. Hinduism connects sin, or pāpa, to the idea of karma. This means that bad actions lead to negative results. These results can keep a person in the cycle of rebirth called samsara.

Buddhism offers a unique way of looking at these actions. Many Buddhists say there is no concept of sin against a god. Instead, they believe every action has an automatic effect through karma. However, there are five very severe crimes in Buddhism. These include harming a Buddha or killing a parent. These acts are thought to bring immediate and heavy karmic consequences.
