Some traditions say heavenly beings can come down to Earth. Others believe people can go to heaven after they die. Some even think a heaven might one day exist right here on Earth. This idea is part of what people call the "otherworld."

Different cultures have very different ways of describing how heaven works.

In ancient Mesopotamia, people thought the sky was made of several domes. These domes were built from different precious stones. The lowest dome held the stars and was made of jasper. The middle dome was the home of the Igigi. The highest dome was made of luludānītu stone. This top layer was seen as the home of the sky god, An.

History shows us how these ideas have changed over many years. The word "heaven" comes from the Old English word "heofones."

Long ago, this word actually meant the sky or the firmament. In the Hebrew Bible, the universe was often seen in layers. Scholars think the plural word for heaven suggests many levels. Some people in the past believed a "world tree" connected heaven to Earth. This tree acted as a bridge between different worlds.

Many different belief systems have their own specific rules for heaven.

In Indian religions, the soul goes through a cycle of rebirth. This cycle is tied to a person's karma. A soul might reach Nirvana to break this cycle. In Zoroastrianism, the prophet Zoroaster spoke of heaven and hell. The Abrahamic faiths, like Christianity and Islam, also have ideas about this. They often see heaven as a reward for good actions. In these faiths, heaven is a place of eternal life.

These big ideas connect to how people see the whole world.

Some believe the human soul originally came from a divine realm. They feel the soul is just visiting Earth for a short time. This time on Earth might be a test of worthiness. Many people use temples or special places to talk to the divine. For example, the Ekur temple was called a "mooring rope" between worlds. These stories help us understand how people have searched for meaning for ages.
