Many people describe it as a land of luxury and fulfillment. It is often seen as a peaceful place of prosperity. This state is frequently contrasted with the miseries of human life. Some thinkers call it a "higher place" or a holy place. It stands in opposition to the underworld or places of suffering. In some views, it represents the world before evil existed.

Different belief systems use paradise to describe the afterlife or a perfect world. In Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, the idea of heaven is often seen as paradisiacal. Hinduism and Buddhism view paradise as higher levels for those with great virtue. These beings reach such levels through meditation and special attainments. Ancient Egyptians believed in Aaru, which was a field for hunting and fishing. The Greeks spoke of the Elysian fields for the heroic and righteous.

The word itself has a very old history. It comes from the Greek word "paradeisos," meaning a garden or orchard. This word was borrowed from an Old Iranian form. That original word meant a "walled enclosure."

In the Persian Empire, it described large walled gardens. The Hebrew word "pardes" also meant a park or orchard. It appears in books like the Song of Solomon and Nehemiah. This shows how the idea of a beautiful, enclosed garden spread through many cultures.

Many specific traditions hold unique views on how paradise works. In Rabbinic Judaism, scholars discuss two types of Gan Eden. One is a terrestrial garden with lush plants and fertility. The other is a celestial place for immortal souls. Some early Christians, like Origen, saw paradise as a school for souls. They believed it prepared the righteous for their ascent to heaven. In the New Testament, Jesus mentions paradise during his time on the cross.

Today, the theme of paradise remains a major part of art and literature. John Milton wrote the famous poem "Paradise Lost" about these ideas. Artists like Fra Angelico have painted souls dancing in paradise. These works often include symbols like the tree of life. Some art uses empty spaces to show that divine beings cannot be drawn. Even in modern times, the idea helps people imagine perfect peace. It connects ancient stories of gardens to human hopes for joy.
