A blessing is a way to share grace, holiness, or divine will.

Many people believe these gifts come from a god. In the Abrahamic religions, such as Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, being blessed means receiving favor from God.

To give a blessing is like sharing a wish. It is a way to ask for God's favor for someone else. It also shows that God is the source of all good things. This idea helps people feel connected to the divine through their words and actions.

In Judaism, a blessing is called a berakhah.

People say these at special times, like during prayers or ceremonies. Many say them before and after they eat food. This is because they believe God provides all food. A common blessing starts with the words, "Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe..." In the Hebrew Bible, God gave many blessings. He blessed sea creatures and humans in the book of Genesis. He also promised blessings to a man named Abram.

Christianity has many ways of sharing blessings.

In traditions like Roman Catholicism or Eastern Orthodoxy, leaders like bishops and priests give them. They might raise their right hand to make the sign of the cross. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, a priest might use a cross, candles, or an icon. They might even use holy water or incense. Some blessings are special and only given by bishops. In the Lutheran Church, priests might bless a home or a cross necklace. In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, worthy men give blessings.

Islam has a unique way of looking at blessings. Scholars believe blessings from Allah can be a trial for people. If a person is grateful, blessings can lead to success in the afterlife. But if they are not grateful, it can be a different kind of test. Islam does not have a special class of leaders for blessings. Instead, any Muslim can share them. They often say "peace and blessings be upon him" when speaking of the prophet Muhammad. They also greet each other with blessings of peace and mercy.

Other traditions, like the Dharmic religions, have their own ways. In Hinduism, a ritual called Puja is very important.

During Puja, a priest might use an Aarti lamp. The priest moves the lamp around a deity or a person.

People cup their hands over the flame to receive the blessing. They might also receive prasada, which is food that has been offered to a deity. Another way to show respect is by touching the feet of a holy person or an elder. This is a way to show deep respect and connection.
