Profanity is the use of offensive words to show many different feelings.

People might use these words to show anger or big surprise. Some use them to deal with sudden pain. Others use them to show they are being informal or close to friends. In many polite social settings, using these words is seen as impolite. Some religious groups even consider using them to be a sin.

How these words work is quite interesting. Most profanities rely on connotation rather than their literal meaning. Connotation is the emotional feeling a word carries. A word might start with one specific meaning. Over time, the emotional use can change the word's meaning entirely. Sometimes the original meaning is lost or becomes unrelated. Many modern swear words focus on religion, sex, or the human body.

The history of these words is very old. The term comes from classical Latin words meaning "outside the temple." In Middle English, it meant to desecrate a temple. In early Christianity, swearing grew from rules about not using God's name in vain. People believed speaking certain names could call upon power or cast a curse. In the past, many cultures feared that speaking the names of evil creatures could bring them near.

Different cultures use different subjects for their bad language. In Poland, many profane words relate to anatomy. In the Netherlands, swearing often refers to disease. In Quebec, French speakers use religious words called sacres. These include words like tabernacle or sacrament. In the United States, the word cursing is often used. It is sometimes linked to wishing harm on another person.

Scientists and students study profanity today to learn about people. They look at it through linguistics, sociology, and even psychology. In 1901, modern study of the subject began to grow. Sigmund Freud suggested that swearing might reflect the subconscious mind. This includes feelings of aggression or breaking social rules. By the 1960s, researchers like Ashley Montagu and Edward Sagarin began more work. Today, we also study how certain words are used as hate speech.
