People wrap their arms around a neck, back, or waist. They hold each other closely to show warmth. This is a form of nonverbal communication. This means people share feelings without using words. A hug can show many different things. It can mean love, friendship, or even gratitude. It can also show sympathy when words are not enough.

Sometimes, a hug is just a quick one-second squeeze. Other times, it is a very long hold.

This can help a group of people feel closer together. Some people also practice cuddling. Cuddling is like a hug but lasts a much longer time. It can last for minutes or even many hours. People usually cuddle while sitting or lying down together. This is often done with family, friends, or lovers. It is a very intimate and affectionate way to connect.

We do not know exactly where the word hug comes from. However, there are two main ideas about its history. The word was first used in the 1560s. One idea is that it comes from an Old Norse word. That word meant to comfort someone. Another idea links it to a German word. That word means to foster or cherish. It originally meant to enclose something with a hedge. These ideas show that hugging has always been about protection.

Different cultures have different rules for hugging.

In France, Spain, and Latin America, male friends often hug. They might also slap each other on the back. In Brazil and Portugal, people might end an email with a hug. In the United States, teenagers often use hugs to say hello. However, some schools in the U.S. have even banned hugs. In some Islamic communities, hugging between opposite genders is often uncommon. In countries like China, Japan, and India, hugging is also less frequent.

Science shows that hugging can actually help your body.

A hug that lasts 20 seconds or more can release oxytocin. Oxytocin is a chemical in your body. This chemical can help reduce your blood pressure. Hugging might also help lower cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone that the body releases during stress. For women, a hug from a partner can help buffer this stress. Hugging is a powerful way to feel safe and connected to others.
