It is a way to communicate without using any words. This act can change how people act in social groups. People often search faces for signs of a good or bad mood. Looking into eyes can also show if you are interested in a person. Some people use eye contact to flirt or show attraction. This often starts with a quick glance and turns into many looks.

Eye contact works by sharing social and emotional information. It can help a person feel included in a group. If eyes do not meet, a person might feel left out. Looking at faces is also a way to show you want to talk. This is called ostensive behavior. In some cases, looking at eyes can cause very strong feelings. Even a small eyebrow rise can be part of this signal. It helps others know your intentions without you saying a word.

Scientists have studied this for a long time. The term for the study of eye contact is oculesics. The phrase "eye contact" was created in the early to mid-1960s. It came from the West to describe signs of respect and confidence. Researchers also look at how babies learn to use eyes. A 1985 study looked at 3-month-old infants and their vision. A Canadian study in 1996 found that babies smiled less without eye contact.

Many facts show how important eyes are for learning and growing. In Germany, a 2001 study watched mothers and babies for 12 weeks. They found that eye contact between them increased every week. As eye contact went up, the amount of baby crying went down. Eye contact can also help people remember information better. Some people find it hard to look at eyes. Those with autism or social anxiety may feel unsettled. Also, looking at faces can be hard work for the brain.

Eye contact means different things in different parts of the world. In East Asia and Nigeria, it is respectful to look away from leaders. In Western cultures, looking away might seem like you are being shifty. In Japan, children are taught to look at a teacher's tie knot. Animals also use eyes to communicate in their own ways. Dogs might see eye contact as a threat. However, eye contact with an owner can release oxytocin. This is a chemical that helps animals bond with people.
