Kinesics

language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Have you ever noticed how a friend can tell you they are happy without saying a word? They might smile or bounce in their seat. This way of sharing ideas is called kinesics. It is the study of how we communicate using our bodies. We use facial expressions and gestures to send messages. We also use how we stand or move our whole bodies. Kinesics helps us understand the things people do not say out loud.

Kinesics works by looking at many different types of movement. Some movements are called emblems because they act like a word or phrase. Other moves are called illustrators that help back up what you are saying. You might use batons to emphasize a specific word. You can also use deictic movements to point at an object nearby. Some people use rhythmic movements to show the pace of an event. Even small moves can show your feelings or release tension.

An anthropologist named Ray Birdwhistell founded this field of study. He first used the term kinesics in 1952. Birdwhistell wanted to see how posture and stance communicate. He even filmed people in social settings to study them. One big project was called The Natural History of an Interview. He worked with others like Gregory Bateson and Henry W. Brosin. He believed body movements have a grammar just like spoken language.

Birdwhistell had many interesting ideas about how we talk. He thought words only carry about 30 to 35 percent of a conversation's meaning. He used the word kineme to describe a group of movements. A kineme is like a part of a language. These moves can change slightly but keep the same social meaning. His ideas became very popular in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Books like How to Read a Person Like a Book helped people learn about it.

Understanding kinesics is very important when meeting people from other places. People in different cultures use body movements in different ways. Because many moves happen without us thinking, we might make mistakes. This is a risk when talking to someone from a new culture. Some people even use kinesics to look for signs of lying. By watching clusters of movement, they try to see if a statement is true. It is a big part of how we connect with everyone.
