A nod is a special way to move your head. You tilt it in arcs up and down.

People use this gesture for many reasons. It can show agreement or a simple greeting. It is also used to show respect to others. Some people use it to recognize someone nearby. In some places, not nodding back might even feel like an insult. This small move helps us talk without using any words.

ways to nod can change depending on where you live. In North America and Europe, a nod usually means "yes." This is also true in South America and Southeast Asia. The Middle East and the Indian subcontinent use it too. In Greece, a "yes" nod is quite unique. A person might close their eyes at the same time. They may also turn their head slightly to the left or right.

Sometimes, a nod can actually mean "no." This happens in places like Greece, Cyprus, Iran, and Turkey. In these areas, a single upward nod means refusal.

People in Greece and Cyprus might raise their eyebrows too. They might even roll their eyes up. They often make a clicking sound with their teeth. This sound is called "tsou" in Greece. This same sound is also common in Sicily.

A scientist named Charles Darwin studied these movements long ago. He wrote about them in 1872.

Darwin asked missionaries for information about local gestures. He found that nodding for "yes" was very common. He even had a theory about babies. He thought hungry babies move their heads up and down for milk. He believed they turn their heads side to side to refuse milk.

Nodding is also a way to say hello. It is like a very mild form of bowing. A downward nod is more formal and polite. An upward nod is more informal for friends.

In the United States, men often use "the nod" to greet each other. They do this while making eye contact. Some people believe you can learn a lot from these small moves. However, nodding can also be a symptom of a disease. This is called nodding disease, and it was first seen in Tanzania in 1962.
