You perform it by raising both of your shoulders. This gesture can also include other movements. You might turn your palms upward. You could also tilt your head to one side. Some people raise their eyebrows at the same time. They might even pull their closed lips downward. This movement acts as an emblem. An emblem is a sign that works like a word. It helps people share ideas without speaking out loud.

There are many ways to do a shrug. One specific style is called the Gallic shrug. This is a very nuanced gesture. It can have many different meanings. To do it, you must raise your shoulders and eyebrows together. You also stick out your lower lip. Finally, you make a small sound that sounds like "bof." This sound shows you are feeling nonchalant. Being nonchalant means you are acting calm or indifferent.

Different cultures see a shrug in different ways. In the United States, a shrug can show hesitation. It can also mean a person does not know an answer. People in Sweden and Morocco use it this way too. However, meanings change depending on where you are. In Japan and China, shrugging is not very common. People there do not use it to show they are unsure. It is simply not a usual part of their gestures.

In some places, a shrug might feel different to others. People from the Philippines, Iran, and Iraq may see it differently. They might interpret a shrug as an impolite sign. To them, it can look like a sign of too much confidence. This shows how important it is to know your audience. A simple movement can carry many different messages. It is a part of how humans use body language to talk.

We even see shrugs on our digital screens today. There is a shrug emoji in the Unicode system. You can also find a shrug emoticon called a "shruggie." This shruggie is made using special characters. It uses the Japanese katakana character "ツ." This character is called "tsu." Using these symbols is another way to communicate. It lets us show feelings like indifference through our typing.
