Ethology is a special branch of science. It is the study of how non-human animals act.

This field helps us understand the lives of living things. It connects many ideas like how animals live together. It also looks at how their bodies work. Scientists use this study to learn about the natural world.

Ethologists use a tool called an ethogram to work. An ethogram is a list of main behaviors. It shows how often an animal does certain things.

This creates a database of facts that stays objective. Scientists also use four big questions to explain behavior. They ask about function, which helps an animal survive. They ask about causation, which is what starts a response. They also ask about development and evolutionary history.

The roots of this science go back a long time. Charles Darwin was a very important early figure.

In 1872, he wrote a book about animal emotions. Other early scientists like Charles O. Whitman studied instincts. Instincts are behaviors that happen in all members of a species. The word ethology comes from the Greek word ethos. This word means character. The American scientist William Morton Wheeler popularized the term in 1902.

Modern ethology grew very strong in the 1930s. Three scientists led this big change. They were Nikolaas Tinbergen, Konrad Lorenz, and Karl von Frisch.

These three men won the Nobel Prize in 1973. This is a very famous prize for science. After World War II, the field grew in the UK. Scientists like William Thorpe and Robert Hinde helped too. Now, there are many journals just for animal behavior.

This science helps us see how animals connect to each other. Some scientists study social ethology. This looks at how groups of animals act together.

In 1975, E. O. Wilson wrote about sociobiology. This helped people focus more on social ways of living. Today, the field is very large and well-known. It helps us understand how all living things fit together. We can see how one action leads to another.
