He spent his life looking closely at honey bees. He wanted to know how they see the world. He also wanted to know how they talk to each other. His work helped us understand that insects are much smarter than we once thought. Because of his hard work, he won the Nobel Prize in 1973.

Bees use many ways to find their way around. They use the sun as a main compass. If it is cloudy, they can look at the blue sky to find direction. The sky has a special pattern of light that bees can see. They can even use the Earth's magnetic field to stay on track. Inside a dark hive, bees use an internal clock to know the time. This helps them know where the sun is without seeing it.

Karl discovered that bees have a special way of seeing colors. They can see white, yellow, blue, and violet. They can also see ultraviolet light, which is a type of light humans cannot see. This light helps them find flowers more easily. Many flowers have patterns in ultraviolet light that look like maps to bees.

He proved this by training bees to pick sugar water on specific colors. This showed that bees are not color-blind like some scientists once believed.

One of his most famous finds was the bee language. Bees use dances to tell others where to find food. If food is close, they do a round dance. If food is far away, they do a waggle dance.

In this dance, the bee moves in a straight line and waggles her body. The angle of her dance shows the direction of the food relative to the sun. The time she spends on the straight part tells the others the distance. One second of dancing means the food is about one kilometer away.

Karl von Frisch was born on November 20, 1886. He studied at the University of Vienna and in Munich. He worked at many places, like the University of Munich and the University of Graz. He studied the Carniolan honey bee, which is a special type of bee.

His book, "The Dancing Bees," was published in 1927. Even though some people doubted him at first, he was eventually proven right. His discoveries changed how we look at the tiny world of insects.
