Otto Heinrich Warburg was a famous German scientist.

He was a doctor and a physiologist. A physiologist studies how living things work. Warburg was very important to the world of science. He won the Nobel Prize in 1931. This prize is for great work in medicine. He was nominated for this prize 47 times in his life. He spent his whole life learning about cells.

Warburg studied how cells use energy to live. This way of making energy is called metabolism. He looked closely at how cells breathe. He studied how they use oxygen to stay alive.

He found that tumors make a lot of lactic acid. He believed cancer was caused by problems in the mitochondria. Mitochondria are tiny parts that help cells make power. He thought cancer cells used a different way to make energy than healthy cells.

His journey into science started a long time ago. Warburg was born in 1883 in Freiburg im Breisgau. He studied chemistry in Berlin and earned a doctorate in 1906. Later, he studied medicine in Heidelberg and finished in 1911.

Between 1908 and 1914, he worked in Naples, Italy. He did research at a marine biological station there. He even studied sea urchin eggs. He found that iron helps them grow. He also saw how oxygen use changes when eggs are fertilized.

Warburg lived through a very difficult time in history. He lived in Germany when the Nazi regime was in power. Because of his family history, he was labeled a "half-Jew."

This made his life very hard and risky. He was even banned from teaching for a while. However, the leaders let him keep his research. They wanted him to study cancer. He even moved his lab to a village called Liebenburg in 1943. He did this to stay safe from air raids.

Warburg loved his work more than anything else. He often said to focus only on science. He worked in his laboratory until he was 86 years old. He lived with his companion, Jacob Heiss, for 50 years. Warburg died in 1970 at the age of 86. Today, scientists still study his ideas about cell energy. Many people who worked in his lab also won Nobel Prizes. His work helped start a new way of looking at biology.
