Walther Nernst was a famous German physical chemist.

He spent his life studying how heat and energy move. This field is called thermodynamics. He also studied electrochemistry, which is how electricity and chemical reactions work together. His discoveries helped people understand the tiny building blocks of our world. He was a very busy man who worked at many different universities.

Scientists still use his ideas to study how living things work at a tiny level.

Nernst found a special way to describe how heat behaves. He created the Nernst heat theorem in 1905. This idea became known as the third law of thermodynamics. It explains what happens when things get extremely cold. As the temperature gets closer to absolute zero, a property called entropy approaches zero. Entropy is a way to measure disorder in a system. This work helped chemists predict how chemical reactions will behave.

Because of these big ideas, he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1920.

Nernst was also a very clever inventor. He wanted to use science to make new tools for industry. One famous invention was the Nernst glower. This is a solid-body radiator made of rare-earth oxides. It creates a bright light that is very useful for science.

He also helped create an early version of an electric piano. This piano used vacuum tube amplifiers to make sound. He was a talented pianist who sometimes played with Albert Einstein. He even owned eighteen different automobiles during his life.

Nernst grew up in a place called Briesen in West Prussia.

His father worked as a country judge. Nernst studied math and physics at several universities. These included the University of Zürich and the University of Berlin. He earned his doctorate in 1887 at the University of Würzburg. Later, he worked at the University of Leipzig and the University of Göttingen. He eventually moved to Berlin to continue his important research.

His life was full of many different connections. He was a close friend of the famous scientist Albert Einstein. In 1909, Nernst even traveled to Zürich to visit him. Nernst also helped start the Kaiser Wilhelm Gesellschaft. This was a group to help move science forward. He lived through a very difficult time during World War I. Even during hard times, he stayed focused on his work and his many interests. He loved hunting and fishing in his free time.
