Wilhelm Ostwald was a brilliant scientist who helped build the field of physical chemistry.

This science looks at how physics and chemistry work together. Ostwald was a polymath, which means he was an expert in many different subjects. He did not just study science, but also art, philosophy, and politics. He was born in Riga in the Russian Empire. As a child, he loved doing experiments with fireworks and photography. These early interests helped him become a great researcher.

One of his biggest successes was finding a way to make nitric acid.

He invented a process that uses a catalyst to turn ammonia into acid. A catalyst is a substance that makes a chemical reaction happen faster. The catalyst does not get used up or become part of the final product. This method is known as the Ostwald Process. It is still used all over the world today to make chemicals. This invention helped make it easier to produce things like fertilizers on a large scale.

Ostwald also studied how solids turn into crystals. He discovered that crystals do not always form in their most stable shape right away. Instead, they sometimes form in different shapes depending on how fast they grow. This idea is called Ostwald's rule. He also noticed that small crystals can change as they age. This process is called Ostwald Ripening. You might see this when ice cream gets a gritty texture as it sits in the freezer.

He even studied how some substances form beautiful patterns called Liesegang rings.

His career took him to many important places and schools. He studied at the Imperial University of Dorpat in 1872. Later, he became a professor at the Riga Polytechnicum in 1881. In 1887, he moved to Leipzig University to teach physical chemistry. He even spent time as an exchange professor at Harvard University in 1904.

He was a great teacher to many famous students. Some of them, like Svante Arrhenius, went on to win Nobel Prizes too. He even once rejected an application from Albert Einstein, though they later respected each other very much.

Ostwald changed how chemists talk about the world. Around the year 1900, he introduced the word "mole" to chemistry. A mole is a way to measure the amount of a substance. He also studied how the size of a crystal affects how easily it dissolves. This is described by the Ostwald-Freundlich equation.

This math helps people make medicines that are easier for the body to use. His many discoveries helped us understand the tiny building blocks of our world. He died on 4 April 1932, leaving behind a huge legacy in science.
