Wilhelm Friedrich Ostwald was a Baltic German chemist and philosopher who helped define physical chemistry.

Physical chemistry is a field that uses the laws of physics to explain how chemical systems behave. Ostwald is considered one of the founders of this science, alongside researchers like Jacobus Henricus van 't Hoff and Svante Arrhenius. He was a polymath, meaning he possessed deep knowledge in many different areas. While he was a world-class scientist, he also contributed to art, politics, and philosophy. His work helped bridge the gap between the study of matter and the study of energy.

One of Ostwald's most famous achievements was the creation of the Ostwald Process. This is a method used to manufacture nitric acid by the oxidation of ammonia. In this process, ammonia is reacted with air using a catalyst. A catalyst is a substance that increases the speed of a chemical reaction without being consumed by it. Ostwald's method used a catalyst to reach a yield near the theoretical limit. This invention became very important when inexpensive ammonia became available through other scientific breakthroughs. Today, the Ostwald Process is still used globally to produce nitric acid for various industries.

Ostwald also conducted deep research into how solids form crystals, a study known as polymorphism. He discovered that solids do not always settle into their most stable form immediately. Instead, they often crystallize into different forms based on the relative rates of crystallization. This discovery is known as Ostwald's rule. He found that these rates depend on the surface tension between the solid and the liquid. He also observed a phenomenon called Ostwald Ripening. This occurs when small crystals dissolve and reform into larger, more stable crystals over time. You might notice this as a gritty texture in ice cream that has aged in a freezer.

Beyond crystals, Ostwald studied the patterns that substances make when they solidify. Working with chemist Raphael E. Liesegang, he explored periodic crystallization. This is when substances crystallize in specific spatial or temporal patterns. These patterns are often visible in geologic formations and are known as Liesegang rings. Ostwald developed a mathematical model to explain why these patterns occur so widely in nature. This work helped scientists understand how matter organizes itself in predictable, repeating ways.

Ostwald's academic journey took him through several prestigious institutions. He began his studies at the Imperial University of Dorpat in 1872. After working as an unpaid investigator, he eventually became a professor at the Riga Polytechnicum in 1881. In 1887, he moved to Leipzig University, where he served as a Professor of Physical Chemistry until 1906. He also traveled to the United States to serve as an exchange professor at Harvard University in 1904 and 1905. During his long career, he published over 500 research papers and approximately 45 books.

As a teacher, Ostwald influenced many of the greatest scientific minds of his era. His students included several future Nobel Prize winners, such as Svante Arrhenius and Walther Nernst. Interestingly, Albert Einstein once applied for a research position in Ostwald's laboratory in 1901. Ostwald rejected the application at that time, though the two men later developed great mutual respect. Ostwald even went on to nominate Einstein for the Nobel Prize in 1910 and 1913. This shows how deeply interconnected the scientific community was during his lifetime.

Ostwald also changed the way chemists communicate by introducing the concept of the mole. Around 1900, he introduced this term to describe a specific amount of a substance. He defined one mole as the molecular weight of a substance in grams. He also worked on the Ostwald-Freundlich equation, which describes how the size of a crystal affects its solubility. This equation accounts for surface tension, curvature, and temperature. This mathematical tool is still useful today, especially in making pharmaceuticals. By understanding how small particles dissolve, scientists can create medicines that are easier for patients to absorb.
