Heinrich Hertz was a famous German physicist who changed how we see the world.

He was born on 22 February 1857 in Hamburg. He was a very smart student who studied many different subjects. He learned languages like Arabic and studied science in several cities. These cities included Dresden, Munich, and Berlin. He eventually earned his Ph.D. from the University of Berlin in 1880. Hertz spent much of his life teaching and leading science institutes. He became a professor at the University of Bonn in 1889.

His most important work was proving that electromagnetic waves really exist. A scientist named James Clerk Maxwell had predicted these waves years before. Maxwell thought electric and magnetic fields could travel through space. However, no one had ever seen or caught these waves before. Hertz found a way to build a tool to test this idea. He used a dipole antenna made of two one-meter wires. There was a small spark gap between the ends of the wires. He also attached zinc spheres to the outer ends of the wires.

To make the waves, Hertz used a high voltage of about 30 kilovolts. This energy caused a spark to jump across the gap in his antenna. This spark sent out waves into the air. To catch the waves, he used a second tool called a loop antenna. When the waves hit this second tool, another spark would appear. This proved the waves were traveling through the air. Hertz showed that these waves moved at the same speed as light. He also measured how the waves reflected and changed direction.

During his experiments, Hertz discovered other amazing things about science. He noticed something called the photoelectric effect. This happens when light helps move tiny bits of charge. He saw that a spark in his receiver was stronger with certain light. He found that glass blocked some of this light, but quartz did not. He also studied how solid objects touch and press against each other. This field of study is called contact mechanics. He used glass spheres and lenses to understand how pressure works. These ideas are still used by scientists to study materials today.

It is funny to think that Hertz did not know how important he was. He actually said his discovery was of no use whatsoever. He thought he had only proven that Maxwell was right. He did not realize his waves could be used for communication. Only six years after his work, Guglielmo Marconi began making radio systems. These waves are now called radio waves because of his work. Today, we use these same types of waves for many things. They help us send information through the air every single day.
