Augustin-Jean Fresnel was a famous French physicist and engineer.

He spent his life studying how light moves and behaves. Before his work, many people believed light was made of tiny particles. Fresnel helped prove that light actually moves in waves. This idea is called the wave theory of light. His research changed how we understand the physical world. This discovery was so important that it lasted for many years.

Fresnel's most famous invention was a special type of lens. He used a design called a stepped lens to catch light.

Instead of being one thick piece of glass, it uses many thin rings. These rings are like steps that bend and reflect light. This design is called a catadioptric lens because it uses both bending and reflecting. This invention helped lighthouses shine much brighter and further. These bright beams helped ships stay safe at sea. Today, we still use similar lenses in projectors and magnifying screens.

Fresnel was born on May 10, 1788, in Broglie, France.

He grew up in a family that valued learning. His father was an architect named Jacques Fresnel. Augustin was a very bright student at the École Polytechnique. He graduated from the National School of Bridges and Roads in 1809. He spent most of his professional life working for the French government. He worked as an engineer to help build roads and bridges.

His work in optics brought him many great successes. In 1819, he began helping the Commission of Lighthouses. He showed that his new lenses were much better than old reflectors. On July 25, 1823, the first lighthouse with his lens was lit at Cordouan.

This was a huge moment for sailors everywhere. He also studied how light bends around sharp edges. This process is called diffraction. He even explained how light waves can be shaped through polarization.

Even though he did great things, Fresnel had a hard life. He struggled with a sickness called tuberculosis for a long time. He worked very hard even while he was ill. He died in 1827 at the age of 39.

Right before he died, he received the Rumford Medal from the Royal Society. His name is still used by scientists today to describe waves and light. His ideas helped build the science we use in the modern world.
